It is possible to argue that the Indian State has in recent past exhibited some positive trends and its economy has taken a new turn. However a crisis exists and this book is about that crisis which India faces.

Indian Society is indeed being churned as at no time in its millennia of history. In the forty odd years since Independence, the hopes of the visionaries who made it possible by the practical idealism have seen many vicissitudes. The clash between the old and the new, between inherited habits of thought, good and bad, and acquired attitudes, good and bad, and the interaction with a fast changing world have created an enormous value disorientation in all sections of society, most of all, its elite.

Old institutions and disciplines have decayed and newer ones based on the best in the acquired values, have not yet struck root. In W.B.Yeats’ somber words, “Things fall apart . . . . the best lack of conviction and the worst are full of evil intensity.”

It is not only the Indian State that is in crisis but the whole Indian society – its policy, its economy and its social structure are in a state of ferment. Some of the consequences of this turmoil are positive and evidence of an ancient civilization renewing itself. Others are not son benign.

Twelve intellectuals – four of them non – Indians, deeply in love with our country – of impeccable authority examine closely this predicament. Originally delivered as lectures in honour of Dr. Mohan Sinha Mehta during 1985 – 87, these reflections are pitiless in their analysis of our failings. But they also are quietly defiant in their basic optimism about India’s destiny, as Dr. Mehta always was.
